Aeromotional, sounds dramatic right? But this is the latest design language that Saab used in its latest concept car, the Saab Phoenix Concept which has celebrated its debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Saab Phoenix Concept is based on a new architecture that Saab is going to use for the next Saab 9-3 model. Phoenix features an aeromotional design that according to Saab is inspired by Saab’s aviation roots and draws expression from Ursaab, the prototype designed by aircraft engineers that spawned Saab’s first generation of cars. The design is directed by Saab’s design director Jason Castriota, the man who also penned the design of Bertone Mantide.

So what gives phoenix an aeromotional look? Phoenix features a dramatic jet canopy-inspired glasshouse wraparound, it has a set of distinctive, side-mounted wing elements that facilitates better airflow management contributing to an exceptionally low drag co-efficient of just 0.25. It also has a butterfly opening doors that give easy access to the 2+2 cabin that blends simplicity with technology.

Another exciting feature Phoenix has is the Saab advanced IQon infotainment and communications system, a ground-breaking car communications platform using Google’s AndroidTM operating system. Based on pioneering ‘open innovation’ with third-party service providers and applications developers, it comprises an embedded computer platform which seamlessly connects to the internet when the car’s ignition is switched on. The touch-screen provides access to audio and entertainment streaming, online navigation, on-board music storage and smartphone-like downloading of applications.

Phoenix is propelled by the combined power coming from a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and Saab’s eXWD electric rear wheel drive motor. The compact, all-aluminum gasoline engine is capable of making 200 hp and features variable valve timing and lift control, as well as start/stop functionality, minimal parasitic losses and a fuel cut-off function. While the electric motor which is powered by a small battery pack aided by regenerative braking produce 34 hp. Mated to 6-speed transmission, Phoenix has a projected fuel economy of 5.0 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 119 g/km.

Saab Phoenix offers three eXWD operating modes. The default Eco mode delivers optimal fuel and CO2 efficiency with power assistance to reduce load on the gasoline engine at low speeds; Sport mode includes maximum power assistance with torque vectoring across the rear axle for greater chassis control; and Traction mode enables optimal grip at take-off and in slippery conditions.
